There's a huge crowd at Abbott Street, Sandringham today to watch the "builders own home" go under the hammer - the crowd is in fact, so vast, that the agent worker bees are trying to shepherd the crowd into the front yard rather than them spilling all over the nature strip and onto the quite busy road - with limited success! Robin Parker opens with a vendor bid of $2,500,000 and although the crowd are a little slow getting going, there's bidding in good time by Bidder 1 for $2,550,000, and Bidder 2 (standing right next to him) offers $2,600,000. Mr Parker is almost in training to call the Melbourne Cup as in literally three seconds of breathtaking quick bidding we are at $2,850,000, and Robin goes inside to give us all some breathing space and let the snorting crowd settle into the straight. He comes out to bidders anxious for dominance in what Robin calls a "carnival atmosphere" and a couple more quick bids, send us over $2,900,000 and Mr Parker finally got to take a breath and announce the home on the market, with six bidders in the mix. There are clearly high stakes with the crowds quiet and fixated on the spectacle. Over $3,000,000 bidders start to fall away but there is still confident, though erratic bidding and the price is still rising. At $3,100,000, the final $5000 bid wins the day and the crowd applauds hugely, leaving, I daresay quite a few broken hearts behind them as the buyer with the winning bid of $3,105,000 move forward to claim their prize and the crowd applauds hugely.
