BOUGHT* - $2,250,000
It was difficult to tell the auction crowd from the cafe crowd this morning on Kerr Street. Around 115 of the people loitering in the sunshine however did appear to be there primarily to witness the auction of the double residence warehouse conversion that had opened its roller door to the street this morning. As auctioneer Arch Staver welcomed the gathered, (and extended) crowd to the auction, he also made note of the street acoustics that helped draw attention to his cause. An early opening bid of $1,500,000 quickly opened the bidding, but having quoted a range of $2,000,000 to $2,200,000, Mr Staver was quick to respond with a vendor bid of $2,000,0000. From across the street he welcomed a new contender in at $2,020,000, stirring competitive interest from the first bidder who met this rise with a bid of $2,040,000. Two bidders quickly became three with a new face in the crowd entering a bid of $2,060,000. $2,070,000 followed shortly after from yet a fourth bidder. With one in front and one behind there was a quick fire of subtle nods that raced the bids between Bidder 3 and 4 to $2,120,000 before a stalemate sent Mr Staver in to confer with his vendor. Returning to the street, we crept slowly forward from $2,130,000 to $2,150,000 before coming to rest at $2,160,000. Passing the property in to Bidder 4 at $2,160,000, Mr Staver reappeared shortly after with a large SOLD sticker, having negotiated a final figure of $2,250,000. The Fitzroy crowd was slow to disperse, and why not, the auction had been only a small part of the morning frivolities on Kerr Street.
