2 Ferncroft Avenue, MALVERN EAST
PASSED IN - $2,580,000
A huge crowd of about 140 people gathered around the street to watch the auction of this new Hamptons style home. Auctioneer Marcus Chiminello worked long and smart to encourage bidding here today and in the end two bidders entered the fray. After opening on a vendor bid of $2,500,000, Marcus called for a $20,000 rise but as none were forthcoming he declared that this was still at land value! A conference with the vendor brought out Bidder 1. After a while and with only this lone bid, Marcus went back inside “for the last time”. And did this do the trick? Yes, another man in the crowd finally offered $20,000 during the last call. Bidder 1 came back with $10,000 and Bidder 2 recounted with $20,000. A long pause again and Marcus cheekily offered to accept $10,000 from Bidder 1 only but $20,000 from everyone else. As we chuckled at this remark, Bidder 1 did in fact offer $10,000 to bring the price to $2,570,000 and this is where the action finally stalled. In an effort to entice new bidders as these two seemed at their limits, Marcus encouraged “anyone else who feels like bidding to give it a go, even if it was only for practice!” I don’t think there has ever been an auction when Marcus has not made me laugh. Anyway, although the commentary was entertaining, the property was passed in here and by the time I walked back to my car, the large crowd had already dispersed. Perhaps they wanted to enjoy the surprising but welcome Melbourne winter sunshine in the gardens at the end of this street?
